Krotoa

Krotoa was a Goringhaicona interpreter who worked between Cape communities and the Dutch settlement. Raised in the household of Jan and Maria van Riebeeck, she was baptised as Eva in 1662 and married the VOC surgeon Pieter van Meerhof in 1664. Her later confinement on Robben Island formed part of the changing conditions faced by indigenous intermediaries in the Cape colony.
