VOC establishes an agricultural outpost at Hottentots Holland

In August 1672, thirteen Company officials were sent to the fertile Hottentots Holland area to establish an outpost and increase wheat production. The post also served the Cape’s livestock economy: it linked the Peninsula with nearby Khoikhoi communities and provided a departure point for journeys into the Overberg.

Significance

The outpost extended direct VOC occupation beyond the Cape Peninsula and became a base for agriculture, provisioning, trade and travel into the Overberg.
