Olof Bergh conducts a second northern expedition

In 1683, Olof Bergh led a second VOC expedition north toward Namaqualand. The party reached the Groen River area, continued exchanges with Namaqua communities and recorded routes, resources and the possibilities of further northern travel.

Significance

The journey deepened VOC knowledge of Namaqualand and helped sustain later efforts to locate and exploit northern mineral resources.
