New Company Slave Lodge completed

By 28 July 1679, enslaved people owned by the VOC and housed at the Castle had moved into the new lodge near the Company’s Garden. When the older lodge burned on 19 August, the remaining Company-owned enslaved people also moved into the building. The lodge accommodated people assigned to domestic service, construction, gardening, craft work and other Company labour.

Significance

The building institutionalised urban confinement and labour management while becoming a central site in the history of slavery at the Cape.
