Swellendam is founded
In 1743, the VOC created the Swellendam magisterial district and installed a landdrost and local heemraden to administer the expanding Overberg frontier.
View in timelineIn 1743, the VOC established Swellendam as a magisterial district in the Overberg, naming it after Governor Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife, Helena ten Damme. A landdrost and heemraden were appointed to administer the district, which included farms and routes east of the older Cape settlement core. Company officials used the new institution to regulate settlers, livestock, landholding and relations with communities in the surrounding region.
Significance
The district extended formal VOC administration into the Overberg and provided an institutional base for further settlement, farming and frontier regulation.

The new district extended formal Company administration eastward while facilitating settler farming, taxation, livestock regulation and colonial claims in a region used by Khoikhoi communities.
