Sousoa encourages direct VOC trade with the Hessequa

On 21 November 1662, Sousoa, a leader of the Chainouqua and a relative of a Hessequa leader, recommended that the VOC establish direct livestock trade with the Hessequa.

The Hessequa subsequently reached the Cape settlement with a substantial number of cattle before the end of 1662. The precisely dated event is Sousoa's proposal, not the later arrival of the cattle.

Significance

The proposal linked the VOC’s livestock demand to a wider pastoral network and gave the Hessequa a route into direct dealings with the Cape station.
