Sousoa encourages direct VOC trade with the Hessequa

On 21 November 1662, Sousoa, a leader of the Chainouqua and a relative of a Hessequa leader, recommended that the VOC establish direct livestock trade with the Hessequa.

The Hessequa subsequently reached the Cape settlement with a substantial number of cattle before the end of 1662. The precisely dated event is Sousoa's proposal, not the later arrival of the cattle.

Significance

The exchange brought the Hessequa into direct commercial relations with the VOC and extended the Cape settlement's livestock market into the wider Overberg pastoral network.
